Recognise the signs, start the conversation, and make a real difference

A colleague who is struggling will not always ask for help. They may withdraw, make uncharacteristic mistakes, or simply seem unlike themselves. The person best placed to notice is often not a manager or HR professional, but someone who sits beside them every day. This practical one-day workshop equips participants with essential knowledge of common mental health conditions, the skills to spot early warning signs, and the confidence to have a supportive conversation that could genuinely make a difference. No clinical background is needed, just a willingness to show up for someone who needs it.
    Objective
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
    • Describe common mental health conditions including depression, anxiety, and burnout and how they present at work
    • Recognise cognitive, emotional, physiological, and behavioural signs of distress in a colleague
    • Understand different coping patterns using the Brief COPE framework
    • Apply active listening skills to engage a colleague in a supportive, non-judgmental conversation
    • Use effective questioning, reflection of feelings, and paraphrasing to demonstrate genuine understanding
    • Know when and how to guide a colleague toward professional support
    Outline
Why Mental Health at Work Matters
    • Prevalence of mental health conditions and why the workplace is often where distress first shows up
    • Reducing stigma: understanding mental health as a health condition, not a personal failing

    Common Mental Health Conditions
    • Depression: what it looks like, what causes it, and why people cannot simply snap out of it
    • Anxiety and OCD: symptoms, patterns, and workplace impact
    • Burnout: when work stress is too much
    • Suicide and self-harm: how to recognise risk and what to do

    Understanding Coping Patterns
    • Problem-focused, emotion-focused, and avoidance coping styles
    • Brief COPE self-assessment: understanding your own coping toolkit
    • What good coping looks like and how to support others in broadening theirs

    Spotting Signs of Distress
    • Cognitive, emotional, physiological, and behavioural warning signs
    • How to start a conversation: observations without assumptions

    Active Listening Skills
    • Physical attending and creating a safe space for conversation
    • Verbal and non-verbal encouragers
    • Effective questioning: open, feeling, thinking, elaboration, and clarification questions
    • Reflection of feelings and paraphrasing to show empathy and check understanding

    Supporting and Following Up
    • Responding styles to avoid: advising too quickly, diverting, minimising
    • Guiding a colleague toward problem-solving and available resources
    • How to follow up without overstepping boundaries
    • Knowing when to involve a professional or escalate
    Who should attend
This workshop is designed for any employee who works alongside others and wants to be better equipped to support a colleague in need. It is especially valuable for peer support volunteers, mentors, team members in close-knit or high-stress environments, and anyone in a people-facing role, across all industries.
    Methodology
This workshop uses a blend of short expert presentations, group discussions, the Brief COPE self-assessment, Burnout Assessment Tool, video case studies, written reflection exercises, and extensive role-play practice with guided debrief. Scenarios are drawn from realistic workplace situations to build genuine confidence and skill.
    Testimonial
“This course very relevant for middle managers like myself. They should open up more runs for this course.”
    Manager, Public Service Agency

“The session is really helpful with the practical scenarios, which helps to emphasize how difficult it can be engaging officers. At the same time, Ms Erin also have the ability to break the ice effectively with participants and break downcomplex theories to simple and applicable contexts for us.”
